Kamernet alerts: how to set up a Saved Search

Kamernet lists rooms, studios, apartments and student housing, for long and short stays. It's aimed at students, starters, expats and locals. Landlords and tenants can both advertise for free.

Kamernet is part of HousingAnywhere. Some HousingAnywhere listings appear on Kamernet, but when you open them to send a message, you continue on HousingAnywhere's own site.

Kamernet screens ads and profiles both manually and automatically. Landlords who pass a bank verification get a verified badge, which is a useful signal when you decide who to contact.

On Kamernet an alert is a Saved Search. You set your filters, save them, and Kamernet sends you an email for each new listing that matches. Kamernet describes these as realtime alert emails. You can change how often you receive them in your Settings.

If you use Kamernet's Android app, it can send push notifications for new matches as well.

You can also make your tenant profile visible. Landlords can then find you and contact you themselves, which works nicely next to your Saved Search.

Fill in your tenant profile before you start replying. A clear, complete profile makes it easier for a landlord to say yes to a viewing.

Browsing and alerts are one part. Contacting a landlord is another. Kamernet's help center says you need an active Premium account to reply to an ad and message a landlord. For HousingAnywhere listings shown on Kamernet, messaging happens on HousingAnywhere's site.

To stop a renewing plan, cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Kamernet doesn't cancel retroactively, so set a reminder on the day you subscribe.

A Saved Search covers listings on Kamernet. Rooms, studios and apartments are also published on other platforms and on makelaars' own websites, and those don't show up in your Kamernet email.

Rooms in student cities can be popular, so it pays to be ready before an alert comes in:

• Write a short base message about yourself and adapt the first line to each room.
• Mention your move-in date and how long you plan to stay.
• Check for the verified badge and read the listing carefully before you share personal documents.
• Keep email or push notifications on during the hours you can actually respond.
